Description:
- multiple, violaceous nodules of variable sizes on the shin and extensor surface of lower legs
Characteristics of the lesion?
- painful
- non ulcerated,
- healing witout scarring
- spontaneous resolution leaving bruise like mark
- presence over extensor surface of legs
Six causes of EN
- Infections:
-
- Bacteria: streptococci, mycobacteria, Mycoplasma, Rickettsia, Chlamydia
- Viruses: hepatitis B and infectious mononucleosis
- Fungi
2. Drugs: Sulphonamides, sulphonylureas, oral contraceptives
3. Systemic disease: Sarcoidosis, IBD, malignancy
4. Other Pregnancy
Treatment of EN in general:
- Bed rest, leg elevation
- Oral NSAID
- Systemic glucocorticoids → must be avoided when there is a possibility of infection.
- For resistant disease:
- dapsone
- potassium iodide
- hydroxychloroquine
- Treatment of underlyng cause
